Living History: Recording COVID
Grades 4-6

$180 per semester (1 voucher)

How will future historians study the current global pandemic? In this social studies class, students will use COVID-19 as a backdrop for understanding the way historians study and record history. The course will begin with an overview of various people who study the past, such as anthropologists and archaeologists. From there, students will review the “Black Death” and compare and contrast the way the population who lived through the plague viewed the outbreak with how we now examine the historic event today. Ultimately, students will experience first hand the difference between primary historical sources and secondary historical sources by creating a COVID scrapbook/journal and COVID time capsule. This class is designed to integrate geography and world history while promoting critical thinking and creativity through hands creation. Additionally, students will learn important and timely facts about the pandemic in which they are living!  Note: The wide grade range of this class will allow students to journal and work at their own academic level.

Global Cooking

Grades 4 – 12

$160 per semester (1 voucher)

Learning history through food is probably the most enjoyable learning process. Let’s travel around the world, learning history via food. In this 12 week class, we will travel to Italy, India, Thailand, Japan, Greece and more! Students will review basic knife skills, food and kitchen safety. Sample menus are Chicken Teriyaki, Vegetable Pilaf, Hummus, Pad Thai, Chinese Fried Rice, Chicken Satay, Chicken Alfredo and more.

Most lessons will take us from preparation through the completion of the meal. Some ingredients may require prep ahead of time (chopping vegetables / measuring ingredients etc) . I will demonstrate each step of the cooking process. The class will be interactive and the students can make the foods in real-time. Students will be provided with the recipe and a list of cooking tools needed for each class.

These classes involve real cooking with knives, blenders, stoves, oven etc. so parent/caregiver involvement may be necessary depending on your child/children. Only you can determine the appropriate amount of supervision and assistance that your child needs. Feel free to stay along and help them if you think they need it.
