SOCIAL SCIENCE AND HISTORY

Advanced World History: Modern Era
Grades 7-12

$180 per semester (1 voucher)

Students will explore ancient history through hands-on, creative activities designed to foster critical thinking and problem solving. For example, the students sculpt terracotta army soldiers while learning about ancient China. Other project based learning include Aztec calendars, creation of Greek pillars and Roman mosaics. Students MAKE the history they study! This class is designed to expand the student’s understanding of history by studying the people and events that ushered in the dawn of the major Western and non-Western ancient civilizations. Geography is of special significance in the development of the human story. Emphasis is placed on the everyday lives, problems, and accomplishments of people, their role in developing social, economic, and political structures, as well as in establishing and spreading ideas that helped transform the world forever. Students develop higher levels of critical thinking by considering why civilizations developed where and when they did, why they became dominant, and why they declined. Students analyze the interactions among the various cultures, emphasizing their enduring contributions and the link, despite time, between the contemporary and ancient worlds.

Remote Learning Model: Students will be provided a “project bag” containing the parts and pieces necessary for the hands online learning components of the class. The class will meet via Zoom for instruction, Socratic discussion, and project demonstration. Students will then complete the projects at home.

The Bible and Its Influence
Grades 8-12

$180 per semester (1 voucher)

The Bible has been and is one of the most influential books ever published. It is a sacred text to Jews and Christians, and it has the respect of Muslims and other members of world religions.  The Bible’s influence is seen in literature, art, music, culture, public policy, and public debate. In this class, the Bible will be studied academically, not devotionally, to learn about the stories and history of text as culturally used by groups from musicians to politicians. This class is entirely secular and while students will study about religion as presented in the Bible, students will not be engaged in the practice of religion and will not be asked to accept religion. The class is designed to give students an opportunity to see how Biblical knowledge can be a key to better understanding other subjects - especially literature, art, music, and the social sciences.

Drawing is Fun and Easy

$180 for 12 lessons, plus $40 for supply kit

I teach drawing using a method I developed that makes drawing really fun and easy! We start with very simple exercises and work up to portraiture by the end of the semester. We will be exploring and experimenting with various drawing mediums, such as various grades of pencils, charcoal, graphite, and colored pencils. Students are usually amazed at how much they progress in one semester!

I don’t teach students to “copy” me, but to develop their own style. I give them the tools and techniques to be able to make their own individual, creative art on their own when they are finished with my class.

Remote Learning Model: Each class will be online via Zoom, with full class participation. I will record each Zoom lesson so that students can go back and repeat lessons as many times as they like, or get more practice. It will also be available to students who missed class on the day it was held.

Materials: I have put together a kit which includes absolutely everything that will be needed for the 12 classes in the semester, including several different types of drawing pencils, graphite sticks, vine charcoal, a full set of colored pencils, drawing paper and other specialty drawing items.  There is an extra materials charge for this class of $40 to cover the cost of the kit.

*This kit would suffice for subsequent drawing classes, if your child decides to continue in future semesters.
