Students will participate in a variety of language arts activities designed to foster creative thinking, oral expression, and growth in basic reading, writing, and sight words. Each class time will include whole group activities and instruction, as well as

divided group activities and instruction according to grade and ability level.

Spring Focus: Insects

This semester it’s all about insects! We will be focusing on expository writing. The students will learn about a new insect each week. They will practice reading and understanding informational text, organizing information, and writing expository sentences and paragraphs. The focus of our writing will be learning how to write to inform. Students will complete an informational narrative on an insect of their choice. They will also create their own new bug and write a detailed informational description to introduce it to the world. 

 

Remote Learning Model: If necessary, this class will transition to remote learning without disruption through recorded lessons, Zoom meetings, and teacher generated material packets.

3-5 Math Skills

Grades 3-5

The 2022 spring semester of 3-5 Math Skills is great for new and returning students! There will be new topics for returning students, and new students will fit right in because this year’s topics are not connected to the previous semester. New students are welcome, and returning students will be exposed to new material! Students will participate in fun, hands-on and virtual activities that create and strengthen a solid understanding of grade-level curriculum standards. Some of the topics we will be covering are: understanding geometric figures, data gathering, problem solving with word problems and math facts. Curriculum will be based on California State Standards for 3rd-5th grade students. This course will include visual examples, online activities and interactive games that will keep students thoroughly engaged. Students will have fun throughout the entire process, all the while strengthening valuable skills that ALL future math classes will build upon!

Young minds need active learning.  This spring students will learn all about weather as we put together our Weather Book Project. It will include the water cycles, clouds, states of matter, and recording and graphing of the temperature. We will also be exploring our 5 senses, including a lesson on braille with a real braille machine. Classes will be taught with a hands-on approach consisting of different activities and experiments that illustrate the lesson.

This hands-on class is jammed pack with fun activities to help students learn all about the brain, lungs, heart, teeth, digestion, and the skeletal system.

Zoomin' Into Zoology
Grades K-3

Zoomin’ into Zoology is a fun, hands-on way to learn about animals, their habitats, adaptations, fun facts, and create animal crafts. This class combines animal science, geography, art, and global preservation and awareness.  Spring semester we will be focusing on

the food chain in our animal habitats: desert, arctic, forest, ocean, grassland, and rainforests. We will also take a closer look at bats,

groundhogs, coyotes, sea turtles, fire ants, and polar bears. The wild world of animals is waiting for you.

SOCIAL SCIENCE

 

K-3 History: People the Changed the World, Part I

Grades K-3

Ordinary people have changed the world!  Through hands-on project based learning, students explore the lives and historic impact of a variety of ordinary people; Jane Goodall, Leonardo da Vinci, and Ann Frank to name a few!  This is a standards based class that is intended to spark a love for HISTORY in K-3 graders! 


Remote Learning Model:  Students will be provided a “project bag” containing the parts and pieces necessary for the hands online learning components of the class. The class will be recorded where students will learn about the ordinary people from Mrs. Chiappe. The video will include project demonstration. Students will then complete the projects at home.

Adventures Around the World

Grades K-3

$180 per semester (1 voucher)

Do you want your child to learn about different countries and cultures around the world? Do you want your child to learn the importance of not only accepting but celebrating our world's diversity? Join credentialed teacher, Debra K. Heiden, as she takes her students on a magical journey around the world. This semester Mrs. Heiden's students will be “visiting” the following countries: Russia, France, Brazil, the UK, Japan, Jamaica, the Netherlands, and Canada. Each student in this class will receive his/her own passport in which to record the interesting facts and traditions about each country that they “visit” during their classes. Among the fun activities that students will be participating in this semester are the following activities: playing the “Build a Snowman Game”, learning

how to play “Escargot” (the French version of Hopscotch), decorating masks for our Brazilian “Carnaval” celebration, experiencing what it's like to zip-line through the Brazilian rainforest, searching for a magical leprechaun, having a treasure hunt for a “lucky” egg, making steel drums, and learning how to dance the “Limbo” as well as many other fun activities. During our final class, my students will be participating in celebrating Canada's WIN Games Day, a special celebration of indigenous peoples who travel from all around the world to compete in indigenous games. Students in our class will participate in a variety of indigenous games from around the

ART

Art Exploration

Grades K-3

Come explore the fun of creating through a wide array of art materials!  In this art class, students will have the opportunity to paint in watercolors & acrylic, learn to draw with ink & chalk pastels as well as create 3D sculptures from everyday objects.  Each project will include basic instruction on how to use the featured art material, an introduction to an artist who used it in their work and various samples of what they created.  It will be like taking a trip to our very own museum and artist gallery each week. I hope you’ll join us for the adventure! Class fee includes all supplies.

EcoArt

Join us this fall for an adventure in discovering the beauty of nature! This art class will combine science & ecology with the practice of nature journaling to record the wonder of what we see in the world. Students will receive weekly writing prompts for their journal, drawing lessons from subjects in nature and create natural sculptures as well as projects for their home gardens. Young Artists

This class is a continuation of the fall Young Artists class where students will continue to explore a wide variety of art materials including pencil, colored pencil, watercolor, pastel, markers, clay, and acrylic paints.  I provide instruction for the materials and share tips and techniques the learners can incorporate creativity into their own works.  The purpose of this art class is to provide all that is needed to facilitate a time of joyful discovery of art materials and art making.

Creative Dance & Movement

MUSIC

Ukulele

Grades K-3

Every student can be a ukulele player! This course serves as an introduction to the instrument and will provide students with instant success making music on the ukulele. Focus points will be strumming and rhythms, reading music, and improvising. This course is also a great way to kick start kids into learning musical instruments. The ukulele is a lot easier to learn how to play starting out than the piano or guitar. Students that start with ukulele will find that they can learn other instruments a lot faster as a result.

Beginning Hand Sewing

Grades K-3

Have fun and learn to sew by hand!  Sewing helps improve fine motor skills and focus. At the same time, students are able to create fun projects to take home.  Students will learn basic hand stitches, how to thread a needle, cutting fabric, tying knots, how to sew on buttons and snaps, and adding embellishments like ribbon and lace. We will start with the most basic of skills, and advance step-by-step throughout the semester with fun and creative sewing projects.

LEGO Engineering

Does hands-on building and creating sound like fun?  Then come join us and learn STEM concepts through building fun projects. We will use LEGO® parts and motors, and sometimes supplement them with common items such as string, paper, crayons, etc. Explore your creative boundaries, and connect your projects to real-world physics and engineering concepts, while guided by an experienced instructor. ​We do different projects each semester!
