Fall Focus: Fictional Writing

This semester students will be creating and writing fables. Our focus will be on the five stages of the writing process as we explore plot structure, character development, dialogue, organization, and theme. Each student will write and illustrate their own fable story book. The semester will culminate with Fable Day where family members will be invited to share in our publishing party.

Novel Study

Grades 5-8

This interactive class is completely literature-based and fun! We read, discuss, and analyze super engaging, age-level appropriate novels. Each week the students will read and annotate focusing on various aspects of the novel including mood, theme, characters, conflict, literary devices, and personal connections. There is optional homework students can complete for a grade to prepare them for discussion, increase their critical thinking skills, and satisfy state curriculum requirements. This class is perfect not only for students who love to read, but for students who are resistant readers as well. All books will be provided and are included in the class tuition. Come and join me as we explore Anne's magical world in the world-famous childhood classic “Anne of Green Gables”!  Every day is a new adventure as Anne adapts to living on beautiful Prince Edward Island in Canada with enough funny mishaps and touching moments to warm any reader's heart.  This class will be taught by Debra Heiden a credentialed teacher whose favorite childhood book was “Anne of Green Gables”. Students will be assigned chapters to read from the book.  During our classes, we will be having class discussions and learning about Anne's world and what it was like to grow up at the turn of the 19th century in a small town in Canada.  Activities in this class will include the following: Seeing a video of Prince Edward Island and going on a virtual tour of the “Anne of Green Gables” museum on Prince Edward Island, drawing maps of both Avonlea  (the town in which Anne lived) and of Prince Edward Island, doing a fun painting project, class discussions, comprehension quizzes, creating a Lap Book, doing crosswords puzzles, creative Writing Projects (including creating a scary story about the “Haunted Woods” (in honor of Anne's all-too-vivid imagination!), and playing fun games. Anatomy and Problem-Solving Creations 1

Students will explore various body systems and create medical devices for them.  Examples of some of the activities/models: build a pasta skeletal model and edible bone model, design/build a prosthetic leg, walk through a large heart model to understand the structure of the heart and how blood is oxygenated, design/build a device to clear a blocked artery, examine a pig heart, build a digestive tract model, and design/test pill coatings.

Animal and Plant Adaptations

What's so special about your thumbs?  Why does a Venus Fly Trap eat flies?  Why do nasty plant stickers exist?  Why are there so many bird beak shapes? These questions and more will be answered through model making and activities. Students will design/build their own plant sticker, investigate water tension and test their water strider's ability to move on water, test bird beak shapes and cold weather adaptations, learn about plant adaptations in different biomes, and more.

Astronomy

Students will explore the wonders of the universe through model building and activities. Topics include the Sun, the planets, the solar system's size, comets, asteroids, and meteoroids, low-mass and high-mass star life cycles, black holes, nebulae, and craters. Students will build models of asteroids and comets, "travel" to each planet to observe interesting phenomena, create a nebula in a bottle and a high-mass/low-mass star life cycle mobile, view the Sun using special solar glasses, and more.  I will schedule a night for students to meet at the Community Observatory in Placerville. (This is the same class that was offered online Spring 2021.)

Electricity and Mini-Robots

Night at the Museum: History Comes Alive

Grades 4-8

In this course, students will use the 2006 movie, Night at the Museum (PG),  as the backdrop to explore geography,  historical figures, and literary themes.  In the movie, historical figures on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York magically come to life at night!  In class, after watching video clips from the movie,  students will learn about the various key characters in the movie that “come to life” in the film. Additionally, we will examine themes within the movie such as collaboration, dedication, and hope. Each week the students will complete one hands-on project based on the topic/character studied.  At the end of the course, the students will watch the movie in its entirety, focusing on discerning fact from fiction.

World Geography

Geographers use five themes to study the world around us; these five geographical themes will be explored throughout the class: Location, Place, Human-Environment Interactions, Movement, and Regions. World History in the Middle Ages

Grades 4-8

Through hands-on project based learning, students study the social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa, and Asia in the years A.D. 500-1789. After reviewing the ancient world and the ways in which archaeologists and historians uncover the past, students study the history and geography of great civilizations that were developing concurrently throughout the world during medieval and early modern times. They learn to think critically and work collaboratively through hands-on projects. Finally, students assess the political forces let loose by the Enlightenment, particularly the rise of democratic ideas, and they learn about the continuing influence of these ideas in the world today.

Art Exploration

Come explore the fun of creating through a wide array of art materials!  In this art class, students will have the opportunity to paint in watercolors & acrylic, learn to draw with ink & chalk pastels as well as create 3D sculptures from everyday objects.  Each project will include basic instruction on how to use the featured art material, an introduction to an artist who used it in their work and various samples of what they created.  It will be like taking a trip to our very own museum and artist gallery each week. How to Draw Animals: Safari Adventure

Grades 3-7

In this class we will go on a safari adventure of drawing animals in the African savannah.  Fine art fundamentals will be learned along the way as I teach techniques for drawing and shading various safari animals.  I will provide instruction and draw-along demonstrations of each animal to prepare the young artists to draw that animal using a photo they choose from the reference photos provided in the art supply kit.  Over the weeks, we will explore various dry media (graphite, colored pencil, charcoal, pastel pencil) on various fine art papers.  The students will have completed artworks for a variety of safari animals, and in the final classes, we will learn about composition and incorporate all we have learned in the previous weeks to create your own drawing of a safari scene. 

Each class will be live online through Zoom.  Each lesson will be recorded and shared upon request with enrolled students if they would like to watch during the week to review and practice more. If a student misses a class, the recording will be provided on the day the class is held.

Mixed Media Drawing and Painting

Sculpting with Clay

Come explore the many possibilities available for creating through the medium of sculpture! With projects designed to creatively experiment and explore, students will have the opportunity to work with various types of clay materials. Our projects will include: making decorative relief tiles with air dry clay, using molds to sculpt objects with paper clay, creating posable figures with modeling clay and designing beads with polymer clay. Girls' Beginning  Self Defense

Grades 4-6

Students will learn a combination of physical and mental self-defense techniques as well as mental health wellness strategies for creating a safe and strong life. Physical and mental self-defense techniques will include: fight stance, creating space, verbal boundary setting (using your voice), punching/defensive skills, de-escalation, and basic kicks as well as situational awareness, listening to your gut (intuition), 3 phrases every girl needs to know to deal with unsafe people, how to ask for help, online safety, what to do if someone is following you, reporting a crime (emergency/non-emergency), how predators/criminals think (so you’re not their victim). Some of the mental health wellness topics we’ll cover: discovering your personal character strengths, stress management, emotional awareness and communication, leadership and critical thinking, the importance of fun and enjoyment, overcoming hardship, taking responsibility for developing a strong mindset for a fulfilling life. NOTE: students will need to bring a spiral notebook each week for taking notes.

Global Cooking

Let’s travel around the world, learning about cultures via food. In this 12 week class, we will travel to Italy, India, Thailand, Japan, Greece and more! Students will review basic knife skills, food and kitchen safety. Sample menus are Chicken Teriyaki, Vegetable Pilaf, Hummus, Pad Thai, Chinese Fried Rice, Chicken Satay, Chicken Alfredo and more. 

 

Most lessons will take us from preparation through the completion of the meal. Some ingredients may require prep ahead of time (chopping vegetables / measuring ingredients etc) . I will demonstrate each step of the cooking process. The class will be interactive and the students can make the foods in real-time. Students will be provided with the recipe and a list of cooking tools needed for each class.

 

These classes involve real cooking with knives, blenders, stoves, oven etc. so parent/caregiver involvement may be necessary depending on your child/children. Only you can determine the appropriate amount of supervision and assistance that your child needs. Feel free to stay along and help them if you think they need it. It is also up to the parent to change ingredients to avoid potential allergies.

Hand Sewing 1

Hand sewing is a fun and creative activity that is also useful!  In this class, students will learn this extremely valuable lifelong skill through a variety of engaging projects designed to teach traditional hand stitches. The project-based learning includes sewing a needle book, a pincushion, a button "tree", a felt mouse, and a drawstring bag. Additionally, throughout the class, students will be exposed to vocabulary unique to the world of sewing. Class fee includes a small personal sewing kit and all project supplies.

Does hands-on building and creating sound like fun?  Then come join us and learn STEM concepts through building fun projects. We will use LEGO® parts and motors, and sometimes supplement them with common items such as string, paper, crayons, etc. Explore your creative boundaries, and connect your projects to real-world physics and engineering concepts, while guided by an experienced instructor. ​We do different projects each semester!

 

Materials: 

In Person: Instructor will bring materials to class

Virtual: A loaner class materials kit will be available for each student.

 

Format:

Project discussion/demonstration: 5-10 minutes

Design/Build​/Experiment: 30-40 minutes

Review/Wrap-up: 5 minutes

Clean up (in-person only): 5 minutes

Speak Up! Speech & Debate    

Grades 4-8

$180 per semester

 

Students explore concepts in public speaking, critical thinking, argument and debate. This course covers the different styles of speeches, rhetorical strategies and the art of debate. A major focus of the class will be the elements of rhetoric as it pertains to information, persuasion and debate. The students will give several speeches to classmates. Various styles of speech will be studied, including: persuasion, impromptu, extemporaneous, and debate.

Remote Learning Model: In the event online classes are mandated, this class will continue on Zoom with an emphasis on speaking in the digital age.

Strength and Conditioning

Grades 4-8

$160

This class will consist of a variety of stretching and strengthening exercises which will improve

muscle tone and strength, flexibility, endurance, body awareness and boost mental and cardiovascular

health. This will be a great way to start the day and prepare the mind and body to learn.

The students will need to bring their own yoga mats. 

Remote Learning Model: Due to the interactive nature of this class, it will be cancelled if in-person classes are shut down.
