Fall Focus: Around the World

This semester we will be taking a trip around the world (without ever leaving the classroom! We will be visiting six different countries and learning all about their language, animals, culture, and people. The plan is to spend two weeks in each country, learning essential vocabulary, reading informational text and cultural stories, and writing about each country we visit. We will focus on building interesting sentences, paragraphs, word choice, and practicing friendly letter format. The semester will end with presentation for parents, including an around the world feast!

The 2021 fall semester of 3-5 Math Skills is great for new and returning students! There will be new topics for returning students, and new students will fit right in because this year’s topics are not connected to the previous semester. New students are welcome, and returning students will be exposed to new material! Students will participate in fun, hands-on and virtual activities that create and strengthen a solid understanding of grade-level curriculum standards. Some of the topics we will be covering are: understanding geometric figures, data gathering, problem solving with word problems and math facts. Curriculum will be based on California State Standards for 3rd-5th grade students. This course will include visual examples, online activities and interactive games that will keep students thoroughly engaged. Students will have fun throughout the entire process, all the while strengthening valuable skills that ALL future math classes will build upon!

Young minds need active learning. Using our senses we will explore the world ofscience.  This fall students will dive into the basic needs of living things. We will learn all about apples and pumpkins including life cycles and taste testing. We will also learn about spiders and insects. How do they catch prey, what do they eat, how can you tell the difference? Classes will be taught with a hands-on approach consisting of different activities and experiments that illustrate the lesson.

This fall students will learn to think outside the box as we study plant life and weather.  We will conduct many experiments on our favorite fall fruits -apples and pumpkins – yes pumpkins are a fruit!  In addition, we will also study wild weather!  Taking a closer look at tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, and thunderstorms all while doing fun experiments along the way.

Zoomin' Into Zoology

K-3 History: People the Changed the World, Part I

Ordinary people have changed the world!  Through hands-on project based learning, students explore the lives and historic impact of a variety of ordinary people; Jane Goodall, Leonardo da Vinci, and Ann Frank to name a few!  This is a standards based class that is intended to spark a love for HISTORY in K-3 graders! 


Remote Learning Model:  Students will be provided a “project bag” containing the parts and pieces necessary for the hands online learning components of the class. The class will be recorded where students will learn about the ordinary people from Mrs. Chiappe. The video will include project demonstration. Students will then complete the projects at home.

Adventures Around the World

Grades K-3

Do you want your child to learn about different countries and their diverse cultures and learn about the importance of accepting and celebrating the rich diversity that our world has to offer? Come and join credentialed teacher Debra Heiden as she takes her students
on a trip to eight different countries. This semester we will be visiting the following countries: Botswana, Kenya, Morroco, Australia, Spain, Vietnam, Italy, and Germany. Each student will receive his/her own passport in which to record what they have learned about each country by writing and drawing in his/her passport. During our classes students will learn interesting facts and traditions from each country through a variety of traditional songs, stories, art projects, and games. Included in our many fun projects and activities are the following: creating and playing the African game “Mancala”, creating African masks, making rainstick, playing the kangaroo hopping game, kangaroo art project, playing traditional Vietnamese game "Choi Chuyen", creating Veitnamese "Dragon Boats", making “Dia de Los Muertos” games (the theory is that this holiday actually originated in Spain!), playing the “Bullfight” game, making a pasta sculpture, playing the “Pizza” game, making gingerbread houses, decorating paper Christmas Trees and receiving fun Christmas surprises.

Art Exploration

Grades K-3

Come explore the fun of creating through a wide array of art materials!  In this art class, students will have the opportunity to paint in watercolors & acrylic, learn to draw with ink & chalk pastels as well as create 3D sculptures from everyday objects.  Each project will include basic instruction on how to use the featured art material, an introduction to an artist who used it in their work and various samples of what they created.  It will be like taking a trip to our very own museum and artist gallery each week. EcoArt

Join us this fall for an adventure in discovering the beauty of nature! This art class will combine science & ecology with the practice of nature journaling to record the wonder of what we see in the world. Students will receive weekly writing prompts for their journal, drawing lessons from subjects in nature and create natural sculptures as well as projects for their home gardens. Be prepared to create, explore and be surprised at what we can discover in our own backyards! Class fee includes all supplies.

Young Artists

How to Draw Animals: Safari Adventure

Grades 3-7

$205 (includes $40 material kit)

REMOTE ONLY

In this class we will go on a safari adventure of drawing animals in the African savannah.  Fine art fundamentals will be learned along the way as I teach techniques for drawing and shading various safari animals.  I will provide instruction and draw-along demonstrations of each animal to prepare the young artists to draw that animal using a photo they choose from the reference photos provided in the art supply kit.  Over the weeks, we will explore various dry media (graphite, colored pencil, charcoal, pastel pencil) on various fine art papers.  The students will have completed artworks for a variety of safari animals, and in the final classes, we will learn about composition and incorporate all we have learned in the previous weeks to create your own drawing of a safari scene. 

Each class will be live online through Zoom.  Each lesson will be recorded and shared upon request with enrolled students if they would like to watch during the week to review and practice more. If a student misses a class, the recording will be provided on the day the class is held.

Creative Dance & Movement

MUSIC

Ukulele

Grades K-3

Every student can be a ukulele player! This course serves as an introduction to the instrument and will provide students with instant success making music on the ukulele. Focus points will be strumming and rhythms, reading music, and improvising. This course is also a great way to kick start kids into learning musical instruments. The ukulele is a lot easier to learn how to play starting out than the piano or guitar. Students that start with ukulele will find that they can learn other instruments a lot faster as a result.

Beginning Hand Sewing

Grades K-3

Have fun and learn to sew by hand!  Sewing helps improve fine motor skills and focus. At the same time, students are able to create fun projects to take home.  Students will learn basic hand stitches, how to thread a needle, cutting fabric, tying knots, how to sew on buttons and snaps, and adding embellishments like ribbon and lace. We will start with the most basic of skills, and advance step-by-step throughout the semester with fun and creative sewing projects.

LEGO Engineering

Does hands-on building and creating sound like fun?  Then come join us and learn STEM concepts through building fun projects. We will use LEGO® parts and motors, and sometimes supplement them with common items such as string, paper, crayons, etc. Explore your creative boundaries, and connect your projects to real-world physics and engineering concepts, while guided by an experienced instructor. ​We do different projects each semester!

No Cook Cooking for Beginners

Grades K-2

Children who start young, trying different cuisines develop complex taste buds and will be adventurous eaters. In this easy beginner’s class, our students will work with kitchen tools like knives, whisks, blenders, food processors and sometimes a microwave or oven. We will work together to measure, pour, and whisk and chop to put a dish together. Children will be introduced to a variety of spices and spice blends. Only you can determine the appropriate amount of supervision and assistance that your child needs. Feel free to stay along and help them if you think they need it. It is also up to the parent to change ingredients to avoid potential allergies

Sample menus are no bake cheesecake, cowboy salad with bulgur wheat, Mango lassi  and pita pockets with hummus and olive tapenade.

Global Cooking for Budding Chefs

Grades 3-6

Learning history through food is probably the most enjoyable learning process. Let’s travel around the world, learning history via food. In this 12 week class, we will travel to Israel, Germany, Puerto Rico, Nigeria and more! Students will review food and kitchen safety. Sample menus are Couscous with dried fruits & nuts, Apfelpfannkuchen, Black Bean Soup, Jollof rice with chicken and more. 

 

Most lessons will take us through the completion of the meal. Some ingredients may require prep ahead of time (chopping vegetables / measuring ingredients etc). I will demonstrate each step of the cooking process. The class will be interactive and the students can make the foods in real-time. Students will be provided with the recipe and a list of cooking tools needed for each class. Students are expected to have some experience working in their home kitchen, using knives and other kitchen gadgets comfortably

 

These classes involve real cooking with knives, blenders, stoves, oven etc. so parent/caregiver involvement may be necessary depending on your child/children.
