High school students are welcome in many middle school enrichment classes. For example, high school students may work at their own level in classes such as Art. Please reach out to the individual teacher to determine if the elective/enrichment class is a good fit for your high school student.
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS CLASSES
High School Literature: The Hero's Journey
Grades 9-12
$205 per semester (one voucher)
Studying, analyzing, and discussing literature is an invaluable high school experience. Engaging literature has the ability to draw students in, develop critical thinking, expand vocabulary, and improve both writing and communication skills. In this class we will read, discuss, and analyze two high school level novels. Each week the students will read and annotate, focusing on various aspects of the novel including mood, theme, characters, conflict, literary devices, and personal and real world connections. There is homework students complete to prepare them for discussion, increase their critical thinking skills, and satisfy state a-g curriculum requirements. All books will be provided and are included in the class tuition.
This semester we will be focusing on the Hero's Journey through reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and A Princess Bride by William Goldman. Students will learn, discuss, and analyze all twelve stages of the monomyth cycle.
This class is aligned with state a-g curriculum standards and when taken alongside the high school writing class will satisfy most of the semester’s English Language Arts curriculum requirements.

High School Writing: Creative Fiction/Expository

This class works in combination with the High School Literature class and will focus on writing projects, essays, and responses centered around the novels studied. All work and projects are designed to meet a-g curriculum requirements. This semester, student writing assignments will focus on creative fiction (a hero's journey), and expository "how-to" writing.

MATH
Trigonometry and Geometry Genius
Grades: 6-12

This is a class with an emphasis on highschool Geometry and and introduction to Trigonometry. Any
students interested in general math help, as well as those who’d like to learn more about concepts in
Geometry are welcome to join!
How do you find the perimeter of complex shapes? What is circumference? How do you find the area of
shapes such as a hexagon? Geometry can be thought of as the study of lines and shapes. It is a branch of
mathematics that gets covered extensively in high school, and these topics are also seen again in Calculus.
What better way to get prepared for the high school level course than by participating in a class that covers
all the basics! Area, volume, angles and Geometry theorems are some of the many concepts that will be
covered in detail, and homework will be provided to help with student comprehension. Anyone interested in
Geometry help is encouraged to join!

Math Game Madness

Math Game Madness is a fun and interactive math class that uses games and puzzles to teach mathematical concepts to homeschool students. Through a variety of engaging and entertaining games, students will learn and practice important math skills such as problem-solving, logical reasoning, strategic thinking, and numerical fluency.

High School Biology With Labs

This course is a year long course divided into two semesters. This course introduces students to the scientific study of living organisms. Students will investigate biological concepts including chemical basis of life, cell structure and function, plant and animal structure, metabolism, reproduction, genetics biological diversity classification and ecology. Civics: Analyzing Current Events

6-12 grade
Analyzing current events helps middle and high school students better understand the world around them. Through socratic class discussion, students will learn to critically think about the facts and history behind the headlines while gaining understanding of the importance of people, events, and issues in the news. Today’s students need an understanding of the world’s economy, politics, social structures, and environment in order to become active, informed citizens. At the same time, consuming news with a critical eye is vital to enhancing democracy. Special attention will be paid to credibility of sources, bias, and discerning fact from fiction.

History: Modern Age
7-12 grade

Students study the Modern Age of US and World History, including geography, from the late eighteenth century to the present. In this project based class, the narrative course description highlights examples from around the world, including diverse topics such as industrialization, colonialism, the causes and effects of the world wars, revolutions, and globalization. ART and MUSIC
High School Art: Painting and Mixed Media
Grades 9-12

In this class, a variety of subject matter will be portrayed through mixed-media works and paintings. Color theory will be taught and explored through fun assignments, such as creating a painting using only two colors. Realism and expressive approaches will be taught. Instruction for fine art techniques for paint and dry-media will be provided as essential skills for artists continue to be honed.

Intermediate Guitar
Grades 6-12

This class builds on skills introduced in the Beginner Guitar class. Students will read chord charts and tabs that are more challenging and dig deeper into exciting strum patterns. Technique will be emphasized more as well as some notation reading.

ENRICHMENT
Mock Trial
Grades 6-12
$190 per semester
Mock trials have proven to be an effective learning tool for students of all grade levels. It helps them understand the law, practice critical thinking, and gain greater confidence with public speaking by assuming the roles of attorneys and witnesses in a fictional criminal or civil trial. Students experience first-hand the difficulties that judges, lawyers and juries face in determining which facts are relevant and what legal arguments are effective. This class is taught by Mrs. Chiappe, a former practicing California Attorney.

Sr. Musical Theater - 2 hour class
Grades 4-12
$360 per semester
Become a part of a musical theater production! Each child will have a chance to participate as we rehearse and produce a Broadway Musical Kids production. Every week children learn their parts. We practice stage presence, singing, and dancing. Simple costumes and props will be necessary. Some provided and some sourced from participants. On the last day of class we perform our 1 hour musical for parents and some of our K-3 FLA students.

Yearbook

In this course students gain useful, real world skills in time management, marketing, teamwork, and design principles. Collaboratively, the students will produce a creative, innovative yearbook recording Foothill Learning Academy memories and events. Students learn page design, publishing techniques, copywriting, editing and photography. A laptop computer is required for this class.
