High School Literature: The Glass Castle and Poetry
Grades 9-12

Studying, analyzing, and discussing literature is an invaluable high school experience. Engaging literature has the ability to draw students in, develop critical thinking, expand vocabulary, and improve both writing and communication skills. In this class we will
read, discuss, and analyze two high school level works. Each week the students will read and annotate, focusing on various aspects of the novel or play including mood, theme, characters, conflict, literary devices, and personal or real world connections.
There is homework students complete to prepare them for discussion, increase their critical thinking skills, and satisfy state a-g curriculum requirements. All books will be provided and are included in the class tuition. This semester we will be focused on British Literature and will read Macbeth by William Shakespeare and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

This class is aligned with state a-g curriculum standards and when taken alongside the high school writing class will satisfy most of the semester’s High School English Language Arts curriculum requirements.

High School Writing

This class must be taken with the High School Literature class and will focus on writing projects, essays, and responses centered around the works studied. All writing assignments and projects are designed to meet a-g curriculum requirements. Students will received personalized, detailed feedback on their writing to help them grow as writers. Our focus spring semester will be on narrative and analysis writing.
This class must be taken in combination with the High School Literature class.

Civics: Current Events & Global Issues

Analyzing current events helps students better understand the world around them. Through socratic class discussion, students will learn to critically think about the facts and history behind the headlines while gaining understanding of the importance of people, events, and issues in the news. Today’s students need an understanding of the world’s economy, politics, social structures, and environment in order to become active, informed citizens. At the same time, consuming news with a critical eye is vital to enhancing democracy. Special attention will be paid to credibility of sources, bias, and discerning fact from fiction.

High School U.S. History is a year-long, two-semester course is fully aligned with California’s high school social studies standards and designed to help students explore the key events, people, and ideas that shaped our nation.
Each student will receive a comprehensive workbook that contains everything needed to stay on track: guided class notes, supplemental readings, primary source questions, reflection activities, short-answer prompts, and a weekly quiz. We will complete the guided notes together in class to support understanding and retention. While this is a yearlong class, students are welcome to join Spring semester.

You and the Law: Understanding the American Legal System
Grades 9-12
$200 per semester

In this course, students gain a practical understanding of the American legal system and how laws shape everyday life. Through case studies, class discussions, and real-world examples, students explore the foundations of civil and criminal law, distinguishing between torts and crimes, robbery and burglary, assault and battery, and other common legal distinctions.
Students analyze the elements of crimes and causes of action, examine how the courts determine liability and punishment, and debate key issues of justice and ethics. Along the way, they will also learn about parties to a crime or contract, courtroom procedures, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens under the U.S. Constitution.
In addition to understanding how the legal system functions, students will be introduced to career pathways in law, government, and public service.
This course is taught by Mrs. Chiappe, a former practicing California attorney, who brings firsthand professional experience to the classroom.

Character Creator
Grade 4-8, 7-12

Take your character design skills to the next level! Students can choose one or more styles—anime, manga, Pokémon, Studio Ghibli, Warrior Cats, or original creations. Each week, they can explore a new character or focus on parts of a character—expressions, poses, markings, or accessories—while building creativity and confidence. Lessons focus on refining proportions, storytelling, and personal style, while leaving room for experimentation and creativity. Returning students and newcomers alike can challenge themselves with advanced techniques and more complex designs. Students can stick with one style or mix styles over the 12 weeks.

ENRICHMENT
Culinary Creations: High School Kids Kitchen
Grades 9-12
$265 per semester

In this hands-on culinary course, students will expand their understanding of cooking, baking, and nutrition through practical skill-building and creative recipe development. Emphasis will be placed on advanced food and kitchen safety, meal planning, culinary techniques, and flavor profiling. Students will explore how ingredients interact, learn to adjust recipes to meet dietary needs or flavor preferences.
Throughout the semester, students will prepare a variety of dishes ranging from savory entrées to baked desserts such as buttermilk cake, chicken bacon ranch sliders, and variations of other classic comfort foods. After in-class demonstrations and guided prep activities, students will apply their learning by continuing and refining these dishes at home. This course encourages creativity, independence, and confidence in the kitchen skills that will serve students well beyond the classroom. Please be aware that this class is not tailored for households with food allergies and dietary restrictions. This course integrates core standards across multiple subject areas

​Future Ready

This semester-long course helps students explore all postsecondary options—college, vocational training, apprenticeships, the military, and other career pathways—based on their individual interests and goals. Students will research programs that fit their plans and present a final project at the end of the semester. Along the way, we’ll cover key topics such as dual enrollment, NCAA planning, A–G requirements, standardized testing, budgeting, and financial aid. The goal is to equip students and their families with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about life after high school.

Discover the art of filmmaking as you learn about film history, write your own screenplays, shoot exciting visuals, act in and edit your own short films. This hands-on class lets you explore how film shapes the world while giving you the tools to bring your ideas to life. Students will be given the opportunity to create and act in their own short films as they are walked through the inner-workings of preproduction, production, and post both behind and in-front of the camera. Preproduction covers script writing, casting, pre visualization, location scouting. Production includes learning what goes on behind the scenes on set as directors, actors, and technical crew work together to make movie magic. Post will include learning how to edit your short film. For those who enjoy acting 30% percent of the class activates you as an actor learning how to create good headshots, audition, take direction on set, and act for a camera verse a live audience. We lean heavily into story development through story structure and ELA screenwriting. This class doesn't disappoint!

Come learn about Jesus with Cat.
Cat began volunteering at Vintage Grace in youth ministry when she was 18 years old and quickly found her passion for mentoring students and teaching others about the Bible. Catherine then completed a 4-Year Residency Program in Youth Ministry at Vintage Grace and now works as the church Ministry Coordinator. She received a Bachelor's degree from Biola University in Biblical Ministry and is determined to help the Bible come alive to students so they can be excited and certain about who Jesus says He is!

Leadership & Service: FLA Student Government

​Through a series of guided interaction and group exercises, students will explore the principles of leadership and learn to develop individual and group leadership skills to impact their lives and their communities. Content areas include decision-making, goal setting, effective communication, servant leadership, organization and time management skills, and concrete strategies to implement change. Additionally, by planning FLA events and activities, this class gives the homeschool student the unique opportunity to experience traditional "student government" without attending a school. A FLA leadership shirt is included in the class fee.

Sr. Musical Theater - 2 hour 20 minute class
Grades 4-12
$375 per semester

Become a part of a musical theater production! Each child will have a chance to participate as we rehearse and produce the Broadway Musical: Shrek Jr. Auditions for parts happen on day one! We practice stage presence, singing, and dancing as we develop our show. Costumes and props will be necessary. Students will be required to provide base costume pieces (like a certain
colored t-shirt, pants) and possibly a specific piece for their character. We perform our 1 hour musical on an assigned performance day outside of class meeting times to a live audience! Sr theater rehearsal time extends to 2:45 pm.
Note: additional rehearsals are required for this class close to our performance date. A rehearsal schedule and further details will be sent out one month before we begin class.

Study Hall and Tutoring: Advanced Learning and Planning
Grades 6-12

​The Advanced Learning and Planning period will be a dedicated time for students to work independently on their school assignments under adult supervision and get help when needed. Each day, students will start by completing a weekly planner, where they will estimate the time needed for their tasks. After this planning session, they will have 30 to 40 minutes to work on their assignments. For those who wish to use this time to prepare for standardized tests, I will provide grade-level-specific sample CAASPP questions in Math, English, and Science, along with answer keys for their parents.

Yearbook: Foothill Learning Academy
Grades 7-12

In this course, students will develop valuable real-world skills in time management, marketing, teamwork, and design principles. Working collaboratively, they will create an innovative and visually engaging yearbook that captures the memories and events of Foothill Learning Academy. Students will learn essential page design, publishing techniques, copywriting, and editing, gaining hands-on experience in the process. A laptop computer is required for this class to facilitate digital design and editing work.
